ALBANY MUSIC 3
With another small grant in 1967, I expanded the studio. My interest was in creating a diversity of sound in tape-based compositions, as in Albany Music 3, but through interactive performance and mixing rather than the manual splicing of the 1950s.
To enable a diversity of sound in an interactive performance, I asked Robert Moog to build a four-track mixer with piano keys that functioned more like gates than mixer potentiometers, so I could combine different sounds simultaneously through the tracks by playing the keys and mixing recorded sounds with synthesized sounds. It was a semi-random performance approach, often producing surprising and excellent results.
